Shakeology Review – Legit or Scam?

shakeology review

Updated May, 2014

As you’re reading various Shakeology reviews, let me first say that I’m very skeptical when it comes to products like this.  I think it’s probably my background as a doctor that makes me this way.  I had been hearing about it for a long time and basically just blew it off without really looking into to it.  I continued to hear a lot of good things though, especially from people I trust when it comes to fitness and nutrition, and finally decided it was time to give it a try and see for myself if this stuff was legit or not.

I had been doing P90X and was doing well with it, the weight was coming off and I was getting stronger by the week.  Then around the 60 day mark, I hit a bit of a plateau that I couldn’t break through.  I knew it was due to nutrition but wasn’t quite sure how to go about fixing it as I was already eating pretty clean as it was.  This was when a trusted source told me that he had experienced the same thing and was able to break through it with Shakeology.  That was enough for me to at least give it a try. With a 30 day empty bag guarantee I figured I had nothing to lose.

If you don’t know, Shakeology is a meal replacement shake that comes in six flavors … chocolate, vegan chocolate, vanilla, greenberry, strawberry, and vegan tropical strawberry.  Many people make the mistake of thinking that it’s just a protein shake but it’s really much more than that.  Yes it has protein in it but it also has 70+ other whole food and superfood ingredients in it as well.  This was the first thing that impressed me.  So many other products on the market in the meal replacement shake category are full of artificial ingredients, artificial sweeteners, and fillers that have been shown to be actually harmful to your health.  I didn’t see anything like that on the Shakeology ingredient list.  So far so good.

I ordered the chocolate flavor and was convinced it was going to taste horrible because of all the good stuff in it.  After all, supplements are supposed to taste bad right?  But you choke them down because you know your body needs it.  Well I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted it and it was good…I mean really good!  I thought I was just drinking a regular chocolate shake.  Now I was really convinced this wasn’t going to be good for my health!

Fast forward a few weeks and I had now lost an additional 12 pounds, my blood pressure was lower, my cholesterol was lower, cravings for sweets and junk food were gone (that was a big one for me), and I felt better than I had in quite a while.  The only thing I changed during that time was the fact that I was drinking Shakeology once a day.  Many people say that they notice a considerable increase in energy.  I personally didn’t notice that, but like I said, I just felt good…that’s the only way I can describe it.

At the time of writing this, it’s been over three years since I started drinking Shakeology and I can count on one hand the number of days that I’ve missed…and that was because of a trip where I just couldn’t bring it with me.  Needless to say I’m a huge believer in this product and have even started recommending it to my patients.  I’ve lost a total of 50 pounds and have kept it off for over three years now.  I’ve also had the opportunity to hear from many others who have tried it and I’ve heard story after story similar to mine…and some much more amazing than mine.

– Tastes great
– Quick easy meal (one less meal to plan and prepare)
– Actually saves me money compared to the junk food and fast food I used to eat
– Measurable improvements to my overall health and fitness

– Some feel that it’s too expensive

shakeology price Follow Me on Pinterest Here’s my take on the price issue. When you break it down it comes out to about $4 per serving. I think it’s a steal for what you’re getting personally. Like I mentioned above, I used to spend more than that per meal for fast food or other junk that was slowly killing me. It seems pricey at first glance because you’re paying for it all at once. However, when you think of it as $129 for an entire month’s worth of breakfasts or lunches, then it makes a lot more sense! I think Willy Wonka says it best in the picture you see to the right haha! It’s so true, people don’t think twice about dropping $5 a day or more on Starbucks (or fast food) that is typically loaded with sugar and is quite unhealthy, but $4 a day for something extremely healthy and just as delicious is somehow too expensive! I don’t see Shakeology as a luxury, I honestly see it as a necessity!  Ok I’ll step down from my soap box now.

Here’s what I would suggest…if you’ve been thinking even a little bit about trying Shakeology, just go ahead and do it.  There’s no risk because, as I mentioned earlier, they offer a 30 day bottom of the bag guarantee.  This means that you can try it and if you don’t love it, you can send it back for a refund even if the bag is empty!  You read that right.  I think that says a lot about the company and how confident they are in this product.

MONEY SAVING TIP:  When ordering Shakeology, select the autoship option even if you’re not sure you’ll continue with it.  It will save you about $13 on shipping…and you can easily cancel autoship or put your order on hold anytime so there’s no worries there. Shakeology definitely seems expensive at first. Some people say its price indicates that there actually is a Shakeology scam. I disagree. I think just the opposite, actually. Shakeology is very fairly priced. Think about how much money you’d usually spend going out to McDonald’s or Panera or Chili’s. It’d be MORE expensive for LESS HEALTHY food. Shakeology comes out to be cheaper and healthier. I can dig that.

So, just made my first ever chocolate shakeology beverage and will give my first impressions:

    – Chalky taste… I mixed 1 scoop of shakeology, 8 oz of water, 4 oz of milk, crushed ice
    – the shake turned out very thick, and I didn’t blend the ice, so it was hard to drink at first because the shake wouldn’t
    pass through the ice!
    – added 4 additional ounces of water, and consistency was a lot better… Still chalky though
    – I image if this was blended with a banana and PB, then the chalkiness will be reduced… Or I’ll get used to it.
    – Because of the thick nature of the shake, it was EASY to replace a meal… I got full before even finishing it. I thought this would have been an issue to replace actual food with a liquid, but it was no big deal. The chocolate even satisfied my sweet tooth I get at lunch.

Personally, I was reluctant to even try this… I hate milk… Ioath it. I will not take whey protein to save my life because of its horrible, powdered milk taste. This, I actually don’t loath… Besides the chalkiness, I can still drink it being it has no milk taste. I’m sure with a better preparation method, the chalky taste will go away… I was given 30 recepies to try – just don’t have a lot of time and I hate cleaning my blender.

But this is only day 1! I’ll push through 30 days and see if it’s worth the time to clean my blender :)

    I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for your comment. It’s definitely worth it to get out the blender…it makes it so much better in my opinion. Just so you know, there is a chocolate vegan option as well (no whey protein in it, only plant based protein). The recipe you mentioned with a banana and PB is exactly how I make it when I use the chocolate vegan formula. It’s so good it’s hard to believe that it’s so healthy for you.

Like you said, you have 30 days to try different recipes. It’s just a matter of finding the right combination of ice and liquid to get the consistency you like. But definitely try it blended in a blender!

  3. Randy says:

I just started today with the regular Chocolate and the newest formula. I didn’t bother with a blender but just used a shaker. While it wasn’t a great taste, it was certainly fine. I am a firm believer that food is nutrition not comfort, not entertainment. I will update my review in 30 days. I also am starting my Fall P90X routine at the same time so will be interested to see how following a more comprehensive high quality nutrition plan with Shakeology as the core contributor will improve my results even further.

    • Dan says:

Try it with a blender, it’s so much better (in my opinion)! I wholeheartedly agree with you that food is nutrition, not entertainment…unfortunately most people don’t see it that way which is why there is such an obesity crisis in this country. Nailing the nutrition side of things will multiply your P90X results tremendously…good luck!

I’ve been drinking the chocolate shakeology for a couple of weeks. Best recipe I found is:

    In Blender –
    Scoop of shakeology
    1/2 Cup of lowfat milk
    1/2 Cup of water
    Small banana
    1/2 Cup of Pumpkin Puree
and a couple of ice cubes

I was a little leary about the pumpkin but it just adds additional nutrition and texture, cuts the chalky taste of the chocolate, and it only adds 40 calories.

I actually invested in a Ninja blender a few weeks back. I absolutely love it as it comes with 2 single serving cups for on the go shakes. I am using Shakeology (chocolate) at the moment. My fav recipe is 1 scoop of Shakeology, 1 cup skim milk, 1 tbsp natural peanut butter, 5-6 ice cubes. I take the time to blend this-believe me when I say it makes a difference! So delish!!!I ended up using my shaker cup the other night due to the fact I did not want to wake the kids. Doable but not the greatest.

    • Dan says:

I use a Ninja too Marie…I always, always blend it. I’ve never even tried it in the shaker cup, it’s too dang good in the blender!

  6. Veronica says:

Are any of the shakeology flavors lactose free and without milk by-products?

    • Dan says:

Yes, there is Vegan Chocolate and the Tropical Strawberry flavor is also vegan which means they contain plant based protein instead of whey protein.

  7. Amanda says:

I tried it in late September and immediately loved the change of energy I received when I drank it. I ordered my 1-month supply, and from October 1st onward, I was a changed person. I am a big fan of the Tropical Strawberry (made with a banana, flaxseed, and vanilla almond milk)!

  8. Megan says:

I’ve been on the Vegan Chocolate for about a week now. I bought it to help my weight loss so far 8lbs. I actually really like the taste, I use 12oz of Almond Milk with ice. I prefer it so be very thick, when I don’t blend it I find that I need a snack within an 1 or 2. I also (so far) haven’t experienced an increase in energy, but I feel good! You’re right that is the only way to describe it. I will continue with Shakeology, because of that “good” feeling. As for price I am actually finding that I’m saving money. So with replacing a lunch everyday my money will go to Shakeology every time.

  9. Sherri says:

I have had digestive issues for 30+ years (Gastritis, IBS, Acid Reflux, Gall Bladder removal, and lately an overnight visit in the hospital with stress induced colonic spasms) She said that even though I wont be doing the workouts she thinks it would help my digestive problems. I’ve all but given up on modern medicine trying to cure my ailments and Herbals the same. (That can get expensive in itself). I started it. But she warned me NOT to do a full scoop. She also has had her gall bladder removed and said you will get gassy the first week and thats not something I can handle cause of the colonic pain. SO, in a blender I put 3 cups of milk, ONE scoop, a banana, powdered peanut butter and either strawberries or pineapples (these are the flavors I am stuck on) then I’ll slowly top it off with chipped ice as its blending till I have a full blender. The 2 containers I have I just bought at walmart. I can fit a blender full in the two. I just put in the freezer. When I got to work, it sits there and thaws. By lunchtime its still cold and good. It was amazing that I’m not snacking in the afternoon and practically ALL of my digestive pains and gripes have all about vanished. Acid Reflux is still my killer but digestive pain is gone. $119 might seem like a lot but its still cheaper than the Rx medicine and herbals I was trying every month. And freezing it I’m only making one batch every other day. If I knew it would have saved me so much money buying that instead of the doctor visits, Rx’s and herbs, i would have done it along time ago.

I have gone down 9 lbs in the first week and its about a 1-2 lbs the following. But, I am not doing this for weight loss. Though, it is nice, but I am doing this for pain free in my digestive system.

  10. John says:

Just finished week 1 with Shakeology. There are a lot of people out there who had bad things to say about the taste of Shakeology and I do not think that they have ever tried any other workout/protien shake before. Shakeology (chocolate) is way better than many other workout shakes that I have tried in the past. The closest one I can compare it to would be muscle milk (chocolate).

I have tried it with ice and whole milk in a blender, with water, and with skim milk. I prefer to hand mix it with a little skim milk that way I can take it on the go. You can make influence the taste by adding peanut butter, banannas, strawberries, etc.. I will probably try these recipies at home on the weekends but have not yet. I have also heard that almond milk is good.

I was skeptical at first about the taste and cost but have found it to be well worth the cost. About four bucks a day is less than I would spend on lunch normally. I have been doing Insanity and taking L-Glutamine to help with the soreness but have still been really tired. I have been eating healthy but still have not been getting the nutrients that my body has needed. After a few days of Shakeology, I feel great. Even better than I did before working out and taking Shakeology. It has also helped my weight loss. This week I have been averaging about 1.5 lbs PER DAY weight loss. AMAZING.

  11. scott says:

3 weeks and counting. This stuff is the missing link to feeling great. I have one for bfast and I can pretty much get all the way to lunch without freaking out from hunger (if i am staying busy!) and I just feel…better. before, I was dragging at work and at home – 180 degree change now. As an aside, i’ve also dropped 10 lbs and have tons more energy than I did previously. A tremendous value for well being and getting on track with feeling alive again.

  12. Ashley Brandenburg says:

I was looking into the Shakeology and was wondering i use almond milk or coconut milk in place of normal 2% milk is that okay with the blend?

  13. Paul O'Neal says:

When I get mine in, I will probably use my blender bottle. Blender bottles are cool because you can blend your shake really good with the blender ball that is included.

  14. Denise says:

I am looking into this to help with weight loss. I am also addicted to Sweet Tea and need to get away with that. I have irritable bowel problems and read a comment that it did not bother Sherri. My question, I see a lot of people mixing with bananas. I am allergic to bananas and do not like peanut butter. Someone mentioned pineapple, am I able to use canned pineapple? Canned peaches?

    • Dan says:

Hi Denise…Shakeology can definitely help with weight loss, and since it helps many people with sweet cravings, it may also help you cut down on the sweet tea. I do know a number of people with IBS that do well with Shakeology, and some feel it even helps with their symptoms. Most seem to feel that the vegan flavors of Shakeology are better for them. There is vegan chocolate and vegan tropical strawberry. These two flavors have plant based protein instead of whey protein. There are many different ways to prepare Shakeology that don’t include bananas and peanut butter. In fact, your order comes with a 30 day calendar of different recipes you can try!

Don’t forget there’s a 30 day empty bag guarantee, so if you find it’s not for you then you can always return it for a refund. Here’s the link again should you decide to try it …and don’t forget to follow my tips above to save about $13!

  15. brian says:

I have tried these and really like them. I mix them with almond milk (chocolate and vanilla) and they are awesome. I did Insanity and didn’t do these shakes but did calorie counting and Smart One meals and protein shakes. They were okay but i did still have the cravings. So far, and time will tell, I hope these shakes kill my cravings for junk! I am starting T25 now and I am hopeful to lose the weight again.
Last year I had a massive brain aneurysm that nearly killed me. At the time I was working out and eating right. I was in the hospital for 3 months and my recovery includes 15 medications that have killed all previous weight loss. So I am back to square one.
As far as cost goes… yes it seems high but like this website owner states, compare it to fast food combo meals, and you’re saving money, and your life.
If you tried to recreate these drinks by making them yourself, you’d go broke!
I have only been taking them for a while, I hope they help to jump start my new attempt at weight loss again. Wish me luck….

  16. Heidi says:

Hi Dan! I’m a little scared to try shakeology because I am on thyroid medication and have also been diagnosed with hyperprolactimia recently. I am 30 years old and am athletic and for the most part healthy. Do you see any issues with shakeology interacting with my thyroid or petuitary glands? Maybe this would help me rather than hinder? Just looking for some advice on a medical stand point. Thank you!!

    • Dan says:

Hello Heidi…I actually know of cases where Shakeology has helped particularly with thyroid issues, but what I would recommend is to print the ingredient list (both vegan and regular) and take it to your doctor to make sure it’s ok in your case. If you need help with the ingredient list, shoot me a friend request on FB at and I can help you out!

  17. Janet says:

I love the chocolate, I always mix it in the blender 6 oz water, 3 ice cubes 2 strawberries or 2 pieces of fresh pineapple. It is amazingly refreshing and filling.

  18. Natalie says:

I just signed up for a 21 day fix challenge, just wondering if taking shakeology while breastfeeding my 8 week old is okay? Or should I just do without the shake. I love the idea of prepping one less meal!

    • Dan says:

Hi Natalie…the answer to this is to ask your doctor! Take a list of the ingredients to your doctor to get his/her approval. I do know of many women who have gotten the approval from their doctor but some have not.
